Frances Long
Practice Areas
Frances Long has dedicated her law practice to issues affecting the elderly and disabled for over twenty-five years. She founded Long Reher Hanson in 1993 (then Long & Collins, P.A.) and is now of counsel with the firm. She practices in the area of elder law, focusing on Medical Assistance planning, disability planning, estate planning for small estates, and probate. She did her undergraduate study at Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated first in her class from Hamline University School of Law in 1982.
Professional Associations
Frances was one of the founders of the Elder Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. She was co-chair of the Elder Law Section during its first two years of existence (1990-1992) and served as a member of the Governing Council from 1990-2000. She also acted as chair of its Medical Assistance Committee from 1990-2003.
Frances is a member of the Elder Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. She has been a frequent lecturer for Minnesota Continuing Legal Education as well as community organizations in the areas of Medical Assistance and disability planning, advance decisions regarding health care, nursing home issues, long-term care alternatives, and surrogate management of financial and personal matters.
Professional Achievements
The Elder Law Section has recognized Frances’s contribution to the practice of elder law in Minnesota by presenting her with the Mary Alice Gooderl Award in 1995 and the Lifetime Service Award in 2006. She has been recognized by her peers over the years as a Super Lawyer in Minnesota. In 2007, she was recognized by Law and Politics as one of the top 100 Women Super Lawyers in Minnesota and as one of the top 40 Estate Planning and Probate Super Lawyers in Minnesota. In past years she was named as one of the top 100 Super Lawyers in Minnesota and as one of the five top Elder Law Super Lawyers in Minnesota.
Frances serves on the Board of Directors for Franciscan Health Community in St. Paul as well as the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Network of Hospice and Palliative Care. She is also active in her church in St. Paul.
Personal
Frances and her husband Kirk have six grown children and twelve grandchildren. She enjoys spending time with her family, working on volunteer assignments, reading, bicycling, walking, and traveling.
